The Minnesota Timberwolves and Miami Heat have been in pursuit of some of the top available players in the hours leading up to Thursday’s trade deadline. That doesn’t mean the teams are willing to part with their young stars.

Minnesota has no plans to consider trade offers for Karl-Anthony Towns, D’Angelo Russell or Anthony Edwards, The Athletic reports. In trade talks with the Toronto Raptors for Kyle Lowry, Miami has not been willing to part with Tyler Herro.

It’s no surprise that Towns and Edwards won’t be moved. Towns is an All-NBA level talent with several years left on his contract. After being selected third overall in last year’s draft, Edwards is one of the top contenders for the Rookie of the Year award.

The Timberwolves have pursued Aaron Gordon from the Orlando Magic, according to reports. Deciding to deal Nikola Vucevic to the Chicago Bulls, Orlando has shifted into a full rebuild of its roster.

Hit hard by injuries and COVID, the Timberwolves have the league’s worst record. Minnesota is set to have a top pick in what’s expected to be a loaded draft.

Miami, on the other hand, is making a push to improve its roster for another deep playoff run. Following a slow start to the season, the Heat are the East’s No. 5 seed within a half-game of having home-court advantage in a first-round series.

Lowry would make the Heat a stronger threat to return to the NBA Finals. The veteran is 35 years old and headed into free agency, however, and Miami doesn’t appear willing to give up Herro in order to acquire the Raptors guard.

Herro has struggled shooting in his second season, only making 31.2% of his attempts from 3-point range. The guard shot 38.9% from behind the arc as a rookie and had averages of 16.0 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game in the playoffs.

Before James Harden was traded to the Brooklyn Nets, there was speculation that Herro could be involved in a deal for the former MVP.
