KEY POINTS

  • Cam Newton is likely to get the pink slip from the New England Patriots
  • Newton has no comforting options in the NFL offseason
  • Newton may end up sitting out or retiring if there are no takers

The future of former NFL MVP Cam Newton is up in the air, with his future with the New England Patriots unclear.

The 31-year-old got a chance to show the football world he can still play this 2020-21 season. Unfortunately, it may be safe to say that his run went for naught.

Newton tried but struggled with the Patriots. From the list of available free-agent quarterbacks, he was the one who made sense to try and succeed Tom Brady. His 2015 MVP season was considered, but the Georgia native just failed to become that spark that Bill Belichick needed.

If it is any consolation, the best Newton did was help the Pats compete this NFL season. But moving forward, New England has to figure out if they will keep the faith in the top pick of the 2011 NFL Draft or take their chances in the free-agent market in the offseason.

That said, the 31-year-old has several options to consider. The worst route of them all is calling it a career–perhaps the extreme one if Newton parts ways with the Pats and gets no offers from other NFL clubs. Here are the other three scenarios.

Patriots continue to keep faith in Newton as the top quarterback

Newton would want nothing than to be the chief quarterback for the Patriots. However, his option could be a long shot especially if his current season performance is to be considered.

But then again, pinning the blame on a failed Newton experiment may be unfair. Though he proved with the Jacksonville Jaguars he could lift a team on his shoulders, New England is an entirely different team.

Hence, it all boils down to the personnel plans of New England in the offseason.

Newton stays but needs to fight for a spot

Another option would be to retain Newton and see if remains the best option for the Patriots next NFL season. New England is likely to try out different players from the free-agent market or even the NFL Draft.

It is a fair chance for Newton although it still holds no promises–especially if a better quarterback is available for the Pats.

Newton leaves, hopes for a new chance with a different team

Assuming the Patriots are done with Newton, the only option left is for him to hope that some other NFL team takes a chance on him.

It won’t be pretty but something that the 31-year-old will have to deal with moving forward. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Newton and the Pats are likely to sever their ties.

As mentioned earlier, if all of these fail to benefit the former NFL MVP, he may end up retiring or sitting out the next NFL season. Either way, that is the worst scenario he could find himself in.

But right now, his NFL future may no longer be in his hands.
