  • Major smartphone companies are racing to build the best handset
  • An under-display selfie camera, however, is yet to be seen in mainstream smartphones
  • ZTE is releasing the first smartphone to have such a feature on Sept. 1

ZTE is launching the first smartphone to feature an under-display selfie camera in a few weeks' time.

While major tech giants such as Apple, Samsung and Huawei fight to release smartphones with the most powerful processors, the largest of memory and storage allocations, the highest resolution main cameras and displays, as well as those with the fastest network or internet connection features, not one of them has ever released a smartphone with an under-display selfie camera.

That honor just might be given to Chinese tech company ZTE as the firm is planning to reveal an all-new smartphone with an in-display front-facing camera.

The device, called the Axon 20 5G, doesn't have any notch or punch hole. The device doesn't even have thick bezels in front. This is because the selfie camera rests underneath the device's display panel.

“All the major industry players have been working on the under-display camera smartphone. Consumers have also witnessed the evolution of smartphone display forms from notch display, water-drop notch display, pop-up selfie camera smartphone, to hole punch display,” ZTE said in a press release.

“The device will be the world's first mass-produced 5G smartphone featuring under-display camera, marking another milestone in ZTE's exploration of the true full display smartphone,” the company added.

ZTE said it will launch the new Axon 20 5G in China on Sept. 1. It didn't provide a time for when the launch event will happen.

The Chinese tech company didn't divulge any details regarding the Axon 20 5G's specs as well. ZTE did, however, create a poster for the said event. The poster includes a partial look at the upcoming device.

Specs

Axon 20 5G was recently spotted by XDA-Developers on the TENAA certification platform. While the ZTE device has an under-display selfie cam, it doesn't have the bells and whistles of today's flagships. Rather, it is a mid-range device featuring modest specs.

ZTE's Axon 20 5G is said to feature a Snapdragon 765G SoC, which is backed by up to 12GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage. It is also said to feature a large 6.92-inch FHD+ OLED display. Axon 20 5G has a quad-camera setup at the back and is said to have a 4,100 mAh battery.
