KEY POINTS

  • The incident took place in Nairobi's Kirinyaga County
  • A woman had gone to relieve herself in the toilet when she saw the baby
  • The newborn was rescued and rushed to a local hospital for treatment

A newborn was rescued from an 80-feet pit toilet on a farm in Kenya's Nairobi on Thursday, hours after being dumped by his mother.

The incident came to light when a female worker went to relieve herself in the toilet. She heard a baby crying and immediately informed the owner of the farm, who then called the local authorities in Kirinyaga County, K24TV reported.

"When a worker went to the toilet, she heard a baby crying and without hesitation informed the owner of the farm identified as Njue and when he confirmed that there was a baby in the pit, he informed us of the incident without any hesitation," a police officer was quoted as saying by The Nairobi Star.

Police arrived at the scene and took out the concrete floor that was covering the pit before starting the rescue operation.

"It was a race against time because we wanted to save the baby’s life. We completed the rescue operation in less than 30 minutes," the police officer told the outlet.

After being rescued, the baby was rushed to a local hospital where he was receiving treatment.

Police said the child’s mother threw her baby boy into the pit with the intention of killing him. She then fled the scene. The search was on for the mother as of Friday.

"We are pursuing the suspect who is still at large," said, Kirinyaga Central Subcounty Police Commander Johnstone Mwarigha, to the publication.

The age of the baby was not clear and the motive behind dumping the child was being investigated.

"We are still carrying out investigations and we will give more information as soon as we get to the bottom of the matter," Mwarigha added.

Last year, a newborn baby was rescued from a 15-feet deep, snake-infested septic tank in Kenya, after his mother dumped him soon after giving birth. A passer-by heard the baby crying and peeped into the tank to find the baby inside, surrounded by two snakes. The passer-by immediately alerted the nearby residents, one of whom went into the tank using a ladder, wrapped the child in a cloth, and rescued the newborn.
