KEY POINTS

  • Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan was traded to the Indianapolis Colts for a third-round pick
  • The Colts have yet to find a solution at the position since Andrew Luck retired in 2019
  • Ryan will be more than enough to buy the Colts time to scout for a franchise quarterback

Fans of the Indianapolis Colts have not been to the Super Bowl since their 2009 appearance against the New Orleans Saints, but there is a renewed hope that the team can find some success this season with Matt Ryan playing quarterback.

The Colts reportedly traded a third-round pick in order to entice the Falcons to let go of the 2016 NFL MVP, and he is expected to play a major role in rehabilitating the organization.

Since Andrew Luck called it a career in 2019, the Colts have yet to find stability under center, and they have brought in a multitude of quarterbacks to try their hand at steering the ship.

Jacoby Brissett again became the starter for the franchise that he guided to a 4-12 record in 2017, but it would be unfair to solely blame Brissett for his struggles since the offensive line was barely there, and he had no reliable receivers to throw to.

In 2020, the Colts turned to 39-year-old Philip Rivers for an experiment that quickly went south due to his lack of arm strength and lingering foot issues that forced him to retire after the season.

Former Philadelphia Eagles play-caller Carson Wentz then went to Indianapolis via trade before the start of the 2021 season. The desperation to succeed was oozing at this time since they paired him with former Eagles offensive coordinator turned Colts head coach Frank Reich. This partnership failed to live up to expectations and was then traded to the Washington Commanders.

Despite entering the season at age 37, Ryan has proven to be a timeless wonder because of his ability to sling the ball with ease to wherever it needed to go and is considered better than the past three quarterbacks mentioned.

Ryan has the arm strength that Rivers has, the deep-ball accuracy that Wentz lacks and an understanding of the game that has allowed him to stay relevant in the league.

Two seasons ago, Ryan led the league in pass completions (407) and attempts (626) and his new organization could definitely benefit from his mentorship.

Add in the fact that they have a budding star at running back with 23-year-old Jonathan Taylor, the Colts have plenty of reasons to look forward to in the coming seasons.

The four-time Pro Bowler can further add to his legacy of underdog teams finding success with him as the man making the calls on the field.

However, Ryan is not getting any younger, and his time with the Colts will most likely just be a stopgap in their search for a long-term solution whether in the draft this year or next year.

Ryan in Indianapolis has given fans hope to tune in this season and will surely be enough to anchor the Colts in the meantime.
