  • Jacksonville Jaguars are favorites to sign Cam Newton
  • Newton is still a free agent more than a month since being released by the Carolina Panthers
  • Newton is defiant in his stand not to play as a back up for his next team

More than a month since being released by the Carolina Panthers, Cam Newton stays on the hunt for a starting role in uncharted territory. And while there appears to be a lack of interest from feasible teams, the bookmakers are projecting the Jacksonville Jaguars and the New England Patriots as the frontrunners to sign the 2015 NFL MVP.

Based on the latest update in the NFL Free Agency Odds, the Jaguars are most favored to land Newton at +190, while the Patriots are a close second at +250.

"After parting ways with quarterback Nick Foles in the offseason and with most of their stalwart defense over the last two years, the Jacksonville Jaguars and Cam Newton seem like a perfect marriage since the Jags are pegged to have the worst record in the NFL this season," a projection from Odd Shark's Gilles Gallant read.

Newton, 30, is standing firm with his pride-driven master plan of choosing a team that will vacate the starter spot for him. And with no team willing to give up the position of their respective primary quarterbacks, the 2011 first overall pick reportedly would rather keep himself unsigned until “a starter gets hurt” to nab the slot.

“No way Cam Newton signs (with) anyone as a backup.,” Joe Person of The Athletic wrote. “(He continues) to rehab and wait for travel restrictions to lift so teams can examine him. Worst case: He waits until a starter gets hurt.”

Newton suffered a Lisfranc injury in the preseason of 2019, forcing him to miss a majority of Carolina’s assignments in the regular season. The uncertainty surrounding his health, which was hampered by the restrictions caused by the Coronavirus, has made the free agency even more daunting for the three-time Pro-Bowler, more so with a lesser to no openings available for his choice.

But there is still hope among the slim chances. Digging deeper through the odds, Newton is assessed as being head and shoulders above Jaguars’ Gardner Minshew and Patriots’ Jarrett Stidham, making them the most vulnerable starting quarterbacks to lose the spot.

“The Patriots and Jaguars are still possible landing spots for Newton, who, if healthy, seemingly represents an upgrade over 2019 fourth-round pick Jarrett Stidham or 2019 sixth-round pick Gardner Minshew,” Samantha Previte of the New York Post wrote.

Besides the Jaguars and Patriots, several other teams are also listed as a potential destination for Newton. The Washington Redskins are priced at +375 for the third spot, as the Pittsburgh Steelers (+575) and Denver Broncos (+1000) complete the top five. The Chicago Bears and Las Vegas Raiders are also listed, albeit with the least probability priced at +1400 and +1500 respectively.
