KEY POINTS

  • The 49ers are not completely discounting the possibility of keeping Garoppolo until next season
  • Lance is bound to take over the playmaking duties from Garoppolo at some point
  • Garoppolo's stellar showing may shelve the idea of trading him to another team

Jimmy Garoppolo is aware that his future as the starting quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers may be winding down.

Trey Lance is undoubtedly the future of the Niners, and there is a big possibility that the two-time Super Bowl champion may be on another NFL team.

However, the 30-year-old has been playing good football as of late for San Francisco.

He remains their starting quarterback in what could be seen as a way for him to get some attention from other NFL teams in the offseason.

The 49ers have won three of their last four games, and Garoppolo played a vital role in those victories.

Also, he was the league’s best passer rating with 113.2 in that four-game span. At any rate, it appears the Niners could make the playoffs if they continue to play impressively.

But along the way, it cannot be avoided that questions on his future will be asked. Garoppolo gave a blunt answer when he spoke to 49ers Webzone.

“It’s one of those situations, you’ve just got to let it play out, I think. We’ve got a lot going on with the season and everything right now. If you start thinking about those other things, you just get distracted, I think. But when we cross that bridge, we’ll assess everything then,” Garoppolo stated.

It was practically a similar response from Niners coach Kyle Shanahan. He is not closing doors but reiterates that Lance is their quarterback of the future.

“There’s a chance for anything, but I think we’ve made it pretty clear that Trey is our guy of the future, whenever that happens,” Shanahan stated in the same report.

But that possibility may not be promising considering the money being invested in Garoppolo. He’s making $24.1 million in 2021 and is due to earn $24.2 million in 2022.
