KEY POINTS

  • Broncos likely to release or trade Joe Flacco
  • Bears, Chargers could give Flacco a shot
  • Flacco may end up playing backup QB next NFL season

Joe Flacco is at that point in his career where he maybe just looking to end everything on a high note. The Denver Broncos are widely expected to either trade or release the 35-year-old quarterback although the latter seems to make more sense.

The Broncos acquired Flacco following a trade with the Baltimore Ravens in March 2019. The former Super Bowl champion did not perform that badly but a neck injury ended his season on a sour note. This was during Week 8 in a loss to the Indianapolis Colts, a game where Flacco threw for 174 yards, NFL.com reported. His season ended with 1,822 passing yards and six passing TDs.

Injuries did Flacco in. It paved the way for Drew Lock to step up and the 23-year-old did not disappoint. But with the addition of Jeff Driskel, Flacco's time in Denver may be up, 9news reported. Lock had 1,020 yards, seven touchdowns, and three interceptions and made five starts for the team. Being young and with a lot of promise, it was clear that the Broncos found a new (and younger) quarterback to call the plays.

For now, Flacco remains with the Broncos and most are waiting for an official announcement. Flacco could spur some interest in the free-agent market with several teams still in need of a quarterback. Among the teams who could give him a shot include the Los Angeles Chargers or the Chicago Bears.

The Chargers need a new starting quarterback following the departure of Philip Rivers. The 38-year-old moved to the Indianapolis Colts. Los Angeles could check him out, someone slightly younger than their former QB.

The Bears could be a plausible destination as well. After missing out on Teddy Bridgewater, Chicago is now scampering for a quarterback. Mitchell Trubisky is far from the promising QB that the team had hoped for although the name of Cam Newton surfaced recently. But until something is made official, Flacco has a chance if the Bears are interested in his services.

Wherever he lands, Flacco is likely to try his luck on a last but long-term contract. It could be the Bears, the Chargers or some other team. If a starting job is not available, he may have to settle for a backup role if he plans to continue playing pro football.
