The Miami Dolphins are the favorites to draft Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa with the No.5 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. The Los Angeles Chargers have been considered a potential landing spot for the signal caller with the No.6 selection.

But it’s no guarantee that Tagovailoa will end up with either team.

NFL Network’s Peter Schrager has reported that he’s hearing there’s a chance both the Dolphins and Chargers will pass up the chance to draft Tagovailoa. Schrager also noted that the Las Vegas Raiders, thought to be Tagovailoa’s third most logical destination, are expected to select a wide receiver with the No.12 overall pick.

There doesn’t appear to be many other likely suitors for Tagovailoa in the top half of the draft.

The Carolina Panthers (No.7) just signed Teddy Bridgewater to a three-year contract. The Arizona Cardinals (No.8) are set with Kyler Murray. The Jacksonville Jaguars (No.9) could potentially think about taking Tagovailoa.

The Cleveland Browns (No.10), New York Jets (No.11), San Francisco 49ers (No.13) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (No.14) aren’t fits for Tagovailoa.

If no team in the top half of the first round is prepared to draft Tagovailoa, someone could trade up to grab the 22-year-old. Each draft usually sees at least one team move up on Day 1 to draft a quarterback.

The Buffalo Bills traded up to No.7 overall two years ago in order to select Josh Allen. On the first night of the 2017 draft, the Kansas City Chiefs moved up to No.10 and the Houston Texans moved up to No.12 to take Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson, respectively.

Tagovailoa’s injury history has raised questions about his potential in the NFL. His college football career was cut short because of hip surgery in November. Tagovailoa had surgery on his ankle in October. He also underwent surgery for a broken finger the previous year.

The coronavirus pandemic has prevented Tagovailoa from participating in live workouts with teams in the weeks before the draft.

The Cincinnati Bengals are expected to draft quarterback Joe Burrow first overall. Quarterback Justin Herbert from Oregon could be a top-5 or a top-10 pick.
