KEY POINTS

  • The NFC East is expected to be dominated by the Dallas Cowboys or the Philadelphia Eagles
  • The New York Giants struggled in their 2019 season with a 4-12 record
  • The upcoming season projects the New York Giants improve due to their deep and young roster

The NFC East standings feature a tight race among the teams in the division. While the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys are expected to be on top, the New York Giants have made a case as a team to look out for.

It was a difficult year for the Giants in the 2019 season. With only a 4-12 record, they were unable to draw near the level of the other teams in the division. The Eagles finished first with a 9-7 record and the Cowboys were at 8-8.

For the most part of the year, the field was given to their first-round quarterback selection Daniel Jones. This signaled a new era for the Giants as their veteran signal-caller Eli Manning spent the majority of the season off the bench. The year saw the development of Jones as the starter while learning from the winning experience of Manning.

With all the struggles that were happening to the Giants last year, Jones was still able to show sparks of brilliance in the league. The six-foot-five standout from the Duke football program was the first Giants rookie quarterback to win his first start since the 80s.

With such an eventful 2019 season, this year looks to be a better one for the Giants. One of the predictions by Yahoo Sports has the Giants improve to a 7-9 slate. While it doesn’t stand out as a playoff team, the pieces are definitely moving towards being a stronger squad.

The potential is there for the Giants with Jones now leading the way. Given that Manning has announced his retirement earlier this year, there’s more pressure on Jones to lead the team to success. The 22-year-old has already racked up good numbers in his first year with 3,027 passing yards coupled with 24 passing touchdowns.

To add to this, the team has a lot of potential in other positions. Free-agent signings such as James Bradberry, Blake Martinez and Kyler Fackrell look to deepen the Giants’ roster. The recently concluded NFL draft also had New York select talent such as safety Xavier McKinney.

The future is looking bright as even legendary college coach Nick Saban sees the potential the Giants have with McKinney.

“I think [the pick was a steal]. Normally, statistically, there are two safeties picked in the first round, if you look at historical data,” Saban said by way of the New York Post.

While the Eagles and Cowboys go head to head in the NFC East division, it shouldn’t be far off that the Giants make their steady improvement moving forward.
