KEY POINTS

  • The New England Patriots could trade for Jimmy Garoppolo
  • Cam Newton is not seen as a long-term fix for the Patriots
  • The San Francisco Niners are unlikely to deal away Garoppolo without huge assets

The New England Patriots may have re-signed Cam Newton, but this does not mean that the many-time Super Bowl champions are done skimming the market for other quarterbacks.

As most know, the name of Jimmy Garoppolo of the San Francisco 49ers has surfaced as a potential target and that remains to this day.

According to ESPN’s Dianna Russini, somebody in the league informed her that a potential NFL trade involving the former New England player is still possible.

If it is pulled off, it will be a reunion for Garoppolo and the Patriots. In 2014, the 29-year-old player from Illinois was selected by New England in the second round of the NFL Draft.

He started his tenure with the Patriots backing up Tom Brady but had his share of starts. This happened when the 43-year-old future Hall of Famer was suspended by the NFL.

Garoppolo was traded to the 49ers in 2017 and this somehow brought out his talent. However, his spate of injuries is well-documented, a reason why his rise in the NFL was not that smooth. So why would the Patriots consider him now, given that his injury history leaves a lot to be desired>

New England may be hoping that Garoppolo would be wiser if he does return to the Patriots for the second time.

Like Newton, he needs to be more careful on the field if he sees to rise among the ranks in the NFL.

It would also be fair to note that Newton may not be a long-term fix. He re-signed for a single season, clearly indicating that he could be a temporary piece for the Pats who are trying to rebuild following Brady’s transfer to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

However, all these should be taken with a grain of salt. Despite his injury struggles, the Niners reportedly plan to keep him in the fray when Week 1 of the 2021 NFL season gets underway.

A trade for Garoppolo would likely necessitate the Patriots to restructure his deal as they did with offensive tackle Trent Brown, Boston.com reported.
