The Nintendo Switch just hit a historic milestone in a much-needed bounce back from the disastrous Wii U.

Nintendo’s hybrid console has sold a lifetime total of 103.54 million units, surpassing its revolutionary Wii console. This is a welcome success for the Japanese gaming giant as its previous console, the Wii U, was a commercial failure.

The Wii U sold a mere 13.5 million units as a plummet in profits in 2014 led multiple executives to take massive pay cuts. Nintendo's president at the time, Satoru Iwata, temporarily slashed his salary by 50%.

According to Reuters, Nintendo sold around 15 million Switch consoles in the first nine months of the financial year. CNBC reports, however, the company is dealing with chip shortages as are various other corporations.

Its sales are yet to catch up to Nintendo handhelds such as the DS and Gameboy.

Software titles such as "Pokémon Legends: Arceus," which were released Jan. 28, are forecasted to drive up the sales of the Switch this year. A sequel to the critically acclaimed "Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" is expected to release by the end of 2022.
