  • The song featured Cardi B
  • The singer said her parents were responsible for her success

Following the release of her music video "Wild Side," singer Normani has opened up about her mother's battle with breast cancer and how the song helped her family "through the darkest time" of their lives.

The 25-year-old singer told radio station Power 106 on Monday her mother, Andrea Hamilton, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020.

"For me, this work that I was able to put out into the world really saved me, to be completely honest," she explained. "Even just being on FaceTime with her as she's going through her chemo and her radiation, and just wanting me to update her on how this video is going, and how the music is coming, it really got her through that. It got my family through the darkest time of our lives."

The singer had also posted an Instagram Story in October to confirm her mother had breast cancer. During the interview, Normani recalled being in the doctor's office after her mother had undergone surgery in October.

"She's like, 'Baby, I'm gonna be fine. What I need you to do is focus. I need you to be Normani. I need you to be the best version of yourself," the singer said. "I need you to continue to work hard. We gotta get this music out. We have the world to impact.' She was just like, 'I'm gonna be fine.' Anything that my mom says, to be completely honest, I believe."

Normani gave all the credit for her success to her parents, especially her mother.

She noted that her parents have been her "ultimate support system" and "her strength throughout her experience has been the strength that I've needed honestly to even be able to allow this to even be a thought."

"Wild Side," featuring Cardi B, was released on July 16. Previously, Normani had collaborated with Cardi B in her hit "WAP" song, which also featured Megan Thee Stallion. The music video was released on Aug. 7, 2020.

On the personal front, Normani has been linked with several celebs, including her bandmate Dinah Jane’s cousin Thomas Hansen, her "Dancing with the Stars" partner Valentin Chmerkovskiy and actor Kendrick Sampson. However, she has never confirmed any of these relationships officially.
