A North Carolina mother has been accused of stabbing her 5-year-old daughter to death, police said.

The police said the 5-year-old girl was found dead with stab injuries at 8:43 a.m. Sunday after emergency officials responded to a report of stabbing at a residence in Hendersonville.

Penny Short Hartle, 50, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with the case, Henderson County Sheriff’s office said in a news release.

The investigators determined that Hartle was the little girl’s mother but did not reveal the identity of the victim. Hartle has received no bond and she is scheduled to appear in court Monday.

Major Frank Stout with Henderson County sheriff confirmed to ABC13 that violent crime detectives were sent to a residence of a mobile home park on Fiesta Lane on reports of a stabbing Sunday. The crime scene tape was put at five different sites and the victim’s body was removed at around 4:30 p.m. the outlet reported.

The sheriff’s office said that the incident was isolated and there is no further danger to the public.

Jan Harvey, a neighbor who reportedly lives two doors down the family, told the outlet that the 5-year-old lived with her mother and the latter’s husband. “It’s very unsettling. I am praying for the family,” Harvey said.
