KEY POINTS

  • Kwon Won Il called out Stephen Loman via social media
  • Loman was quick to accept the challenge
  • Kwon versus Loman has the makings of a fight of the night candidate

The bantamweight scene within ONE Championship is one of the most heavily-monitored divisions because of the overall talent and the recent title change that happened.

With a new bantamweight king in the form of John Lineker, the target shifted from Bibiano Fernandes to him after he knocked out his Brazilian compatriot in stunning fashion at ONE: Lights Out in March of this year.

This also means that ranked fighters will be looking to have their own marquee-worthy fights to establish themselves as the next challenger for Lineker.

Look no further than South Korea's Kwon Won Il who has been keen to prove himself as the next big thing in the bantamweight division.

Recently, Kwon publicly called out the No. 4-ranked Stephen Loman, and while he mentioned his respect for the former BRAVE CF bantamweight titleholder, he was quick to call him out on his fight style.

"I have nothing but respect for you, but I'm the only fighter in ONE Championship that can give [an] exciting fight against you because of your boring style. I make every fight the most exciting [to watch], no matter what style is against me," he wrote in a Facebook post.

"Our fight is not only trending in the Philippines, but in Korea also. I know you're too scared to fight me in Korea, so I can go to the Philippines if there's an event there this year or we can even do it in Singapore. Wherever ONE Championship wants me to be in, I'll be there."

To Loman's credit, he did not make Kwon wait long and eagerly accepted the offer from the South Korean.

"Now that he calls up my name, I am in for it. Let's go," Loman stated.

Kwon recently signed his extension with ONE Championship, further ensuring that a potential match against Loman could happen as soon as possible.

This would not be the first time that they publicly commented on their potential clash as Kwon, ranked third in the division, claimed Loman was "overhyped" following his debut win against Yusup Saadulaev at ONE: Winter Warriors II.

Kwon himself fought at the event as he knocked out Loman's stablemate Kevin Belingon with a vicious body punch.

"The Sniper" admitted in February that their paths will have to inevitably cross as they both have a decent claim for a title shot as he is on a two-fight win streak filled with dominant performances against Saadulaev and Shoko Sato.

The No.2-ranked bantamweight in Fabricio Andrade is currently in line for a possible title challenge as he ended Kwon's three-fight win streak in spectacular fashion at ONE 158 in June, but it does not mean he would not be closely monitoring this potential fight.

The Singapore-based combat sports outfit could have the pair fight for the right to be next in line behind Andrade and then have the winner take on the Brazilian spitfire for the first crack at the bantamweight title.

Loman will have the opportunity to avenge Belingon and move up in the rankings by beating Kwon, while "Pretty Boy" will get a step closer to the title picture.

Should both men step into the cage after months of talking and public call-outs, mixed martial arys fans will surely be treated to an instant fight of the night candidate.
