KEY POINTS

  • Oscar De La Hoya follows the lead of Mike Tyson and will fight again in July
  • His opponent may come from the mixed martial arts world
  • De La Hoya could face Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match

Oscar De La Hoya is following the lead of other boxers who have come out of retirement. The 48-year-old made the official announcement at the pre-fight press conference for the upcoming Jake Paul vs. Ben Askren showdown. The target date for the former boxing champion is on July 3, although it was not mentioned who he will face.

De La Hoya made the announcement short and sweet, TMZ Sports reported. He just revealed the plans, dropped the microphone and walked off stage.

It was also mentioned by Ryan Kavanaugh, CEO of Triller parent company Proxima Media, that De La Hoya’s comeback fight will be staged in Texas, possibly at the AT&T Stadium.

Related to Kavanaugh’s announcement, the Triller top brass mentioned that De La Hoya’s potential opponent would be someone from the mixed martial arts world. The ideal opponent is a big UFC personality, but no names were dropped.

This confirms the teased plans of De La Hoya to make a ring return. In December, the Golden Boy CEO hinted that he wanted to try Mike Tyson's move.

But at the time, his list of preferred opponents comprised boxers. That list included Floyd Mayweather Jr., and ambitiously, Gennady Golovkin. Most felt that the 48-year-old may be pushing his luck by wanting a crack at Triple G.

If the words of Kavanaugh are to be believed, the plans are different for the July fight. A better idea of who De La Hoya will face should appear in the coming weeks. Some MMA fighters like Askren are trying out boxing, even if pundits feel that it is something where they may not fare well.

Other names in the past who have indicated that they are open to a boxing match include Conor McGregor, Dillon Danis and even Khabib Nurmagomedov. There was also that news about Anderson Silva facing Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in a boxing match. However, that was shot down by the camp of “The Spider.” As of this writing, it remains to be seen if De La Hoya will limit his choices to MMA fighters.

If De La Hoya is to fight an actual boxer, Mayweather is a plausible choice. If he is open to it, he may even factor in YouTubers Jake Paul or Logan Paul. For now, the former boxing champion’s July 3 opponent remains a mystery.
