Best Supporting Actress nominee Jessica Chastain turned heads on the Red Carpet in a black-and-gold hand-embroidered Alexander McQueen gown at the 84th Annual Academy Awards.

There was something about the embroidery of this dress, Chastain told the Hollywood Reporter. It felt larger than life - and this is a larger-than-life moment. I always wanted to be an actor. Most little girls dream of their wedding dresses; I grew up dreaming of my Oscar dress.

Chastain paired the strapless McQueen dress with Brian Atwood heels and nearly $2 million worth of Harry Winston yellow diamonds.

Despite Chastain's enthusiasm, the dress was a polarizing choice, landing on many best - and worst - dressed lists. The dress was featured on many best dressed lists, including Vogue's top ten list and People's 15 best dressed. The Tree of Life actress was also named the best dressed celebrity by Twitter users, according to data compiled by the Academy from Twitter.

However, not everyone loved Chastain's Oscars choice. Other fashion critics, like the Washington Post's Ned Martel, found the dress to be a flop.

Her goth gown featured a mess of appliques that looked like it was licked by flames, Martel commented. Worse than that: Its strapless top gathered up the skin at her shoulders as if she were in a yanked-tight corset.

In her black-and-gold McQueen, Chastain was accompanied to the 2012 Oscars with her grandmother.

I'm going to see it through her eyes, Chastain told the Hollywood Reporter. It's making the whole thing so much sweeter. All her friends are watching at home.

While she was nominated for Best Supporting actress for her role in The Help, Chastain lost the award to her co-star Octavia Spencer. She also played a leading role in The Tree of Life, which was nominated for Best Picture.

What do you think? Does Jessica Chastain's dress put her on the best or worst dressed list for the 2012 Oscars?
