The Kansas City Chiefs received good news regarding their superstar quarterback Friday. The team reportedly expects Patrick Mahomes to return during the 2019 NFL season after leaving Thursday night’s game against the Denver Broncos with an injury.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, an MRI confirmed that Mahomes didn’t suffer any serious damage in addition to a dislocated kneecap. There is no official timetable, though it was reported earlier that the reigning NFL MVP is expected to miss at least three games.

A three-week absence would mean missing games against the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings and Tennessee Titans. The Chiefs will take on the Los Angeles Chargers in Mexico City in Week 11 before going on a bye in Week 12.

If Mahomes only misses a few games, there’s a decent chance the Chiefs will still be in first place when he gets back on the field. Kansas City took a 1.5-game lead atop the AFC West with Thursday’s 30-6 victory in Denver.

The Broncos are three games out of first place. The Chargers are 2.5 games behind Kansas City after a disastrous start. The Oakland Raiders are in second place with difficult games coming up.

The Raiders will visit the Packers and Houston Texans in their next two games. Oakland isn’t scheduled to play a team that’s currently below .500 until Week 10 when they host the Chargers.

Mahomes leads the NFL with 2,180 passing yards. He’s tied for first with 15 touchdown passes and he ranks second with a 113.1 passer rating.

Matt Moore played well in relief of Mahomes Thursday. He hasn’t started an NFL game since 2017 when he went 0-2 with the Miami Dolphins, posting a 75.6 passer rating for the season.
