Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has questioned Edinson Cavani's commitment to the Red Devils during the 2021-22 season, calling him a "disgrace."

With a few injuries combined with the loss of form and the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo, Cavani had a forgettable run in the campaign that saw Manchester United finish sixth in the Premier League. As a result, the Red Devils failed to secure a Champions League slot for next season.

It has been confirmed that Manchester United are not offering an extension to Cavani, who will be out of contract next month. The Uruguayan forward scored just two goals in 20 appearances for the Old Trafford, across all competitions, in the 2021-22 campaign.

Citing Cavani's absence from the squad for February's FA Cup loss against Middlesbrough as an example, Scholes said that the former Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) star was not fully committed to Manchester United in what was a difficult campaign for the club.

"Cavani I think was a disgrace this year, he hardly ever played. He pulled out of the Middlesbrough game because he had to travel back from wherever he was. Funnily enough, since that Middlesbrough game I think I heard last night United have won only five out of 18 games or something since then," Scholes told Premier League Productions, Goal reported.

Manchester United sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the middle of the recently ended season and brought in Ralf Rangnick on a temporary basis. Ahead of the 2022-23 season, the club has signed former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag as their permanent manager.

"It's been embarrassing, this manager [Ten Hag] now needs backing. Who's going to help him do that? The club upstairs is still a bit of a mess, we don't really know," added Scholes.

Cavani finished his Manchester United career with 19 goals and seven assists in 59 games in all competitions. He moved from PSG to Manchester as a free agent in the summer of 2020.

While Cavani's next club has not been decided yet, Fiorentina are among the two Serie A clubs that are interested in landing the Uruguay national, according to Calciomercato. Salernitana, who narrowly avoided relegation this term, are also keen on signing the veteran striker.

Cavani first gained popularity during his stint at Serie A club Napoli. He spent three seasons there and scored 104 goals in 138 competitive games.
