KEY POINTS

  • A new medium-sized map called the Campsite is now available
  • Four new ghosts have been added to the game as well
  • The update has a number of bug fixes and quality of life improvements

A new major update for “Phasmophobia” has recently been released, featuring a slew of new content that should get many avid ghost hunters excited to hop back into the game.

Dubbed the Nightmare update, Patch 0.4.0 for “Phasmophobia” takes a bold new direction in terms of map design. Instead of the usual dark and claustrophobic hallways frequently found in the existing levels, the new Maple Lodge Campsite features a large outdoor area with multiple points of interest like tents and cabins.

This new level will be a medium-sized map similar to the Highschool, so players can expect to do a fair bit of walking around before they can find the ghost. The open design of the Campsite map also means that players will have to rely on breaking line of sight from the ghost since hiding places will be few and far between.

Along with the new map are four new ghosts: the Raiju, Onryo, Obake and the Twins. The ghosts will have their unique behaviors, strengths and weaknesses like the other ones already in the game, and players will have to keep their eyes out for new paranormal phenomena if they want to spot the new spirits in the wild.

Additional features that came with the patch include a weather system, difficulty reworks and a host of tweaks and fixes.

Each map will now start with a random weather setting that will affect how players proceed with their investigations. Rain and strong winds may impair hearing while snow can make detecting freezing temperatures harder.

Meanwhile, revamped difficulty settings will offer players a more balanced and exciting approach to each investigation. Harder difficulties will make ghosts hunt for longer and players will have less time to prepare once they enter a location. A new Nightmare difficulty mode has also been added, offering the greatest challenge that can give even the best ghost hunters a run for their money.

A bunch of gameplay tweaks and ghost interactions were added to the game as well. The Ouija Board will now reduce a player’s sanity if it triggers a response from a ghost. Additionally, other pieces of equipment will now react to ghosts. Lighters can now be blown out just like candles, walkie-talkies will now buzz with static when being hunted and attract ghosts when used, and electronic devices will now get disrupted when a ghost is nearby.

Other changes include a long list of general bug fixes and quality of life improvements.
