KEY POINTS

  • Ghosts will now move faster during hunts
  • Furniture will now block line of sight of ghosts
  • Ghosts can now investigate a player's last known position

The latest beta build for “Phasmophobia” is introducing a few new changes that will make ghosts a tad bit faster and a whole lot smarter during hunts, making them feel much deadlier than before. These changes are aimed towards making the ghosts more threatening while also giving players a bit more room to play around them.

The biggest and perhaps most noticeable change is the adjustment to the ghosts’ chase speed. All ghosts (except the Revenant) will now move at a much faster pace when they are actively hunting players during games, according to the patch notes released on Twitter. However, they will return to their normal speed once line-of-sight is broken, making large maps like Asylum or High School a little harder to navigate during hunts.

To compensate for this, Kinetic Games implemented two more changes to ghost behavior. First, players will have a five-second grace period before a hunt officially starts. During the five seconds, the ghost will be visible but stationary, granting players an opportunity to snap some photos and scramble for the nearest exist.

Second, furniture will now block line of sight. This is a huge change as it gives players more places and opportunities to hide when they get caught in the open, and it also diminishes the effect of the ghost movement speed buff.

This little hide-and-seek dynamic is further emphasized by a change to how ghosts move around the environment. They will actively search a player’s last known location and they now have a 50% chance of actually remembering where the player was last seen. This encourages players to switch their hiding spots after every hunt and makes the game a bit less predictable. Players will also be able to hear ghost footsteps from much farther away.

Lastly, a new voice mechanic is getting implemented that will let players whisper to each other without giving away their position to the ghost. Ghosts will only respond when player voice levels break a threshold, opening up some opportunities for some tense moments with friends.

“Phasmophobia” has been constantly getting both minor and major changes since its release, and there’s no telling how much more the game will improve in the coming months.
