KEY POINTS

  • Landry Shamet is not bothered by his shooting woes
  • The Suns acquired him from the Nets early in the offseason
  • Shamet is temporarily out of his slump after putting up season-highs against the Cavs and Rockets

The Phoenix Suns’ offseason acquisition of Landry Shamet from the Brooklyn Nets via trade in the offseason was believed to be a major move for them, but he has since struggled shooting the ball.

After mounting a comeback victory against the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday, November 6, Shamet was asked by the media about his shooting slump.

“I’m not worried about shooting, you all can ask me that in however far down the line. If I’m having a rough game or I went 10-for-10, that’s the last thing I care about and want to talk about. I want to be the best , [most] complete player and do my job in all facets for this team defensively and all that,” Shamet nonchalantly explained.

Going into the Atlanta game, the marksman was averaging 6.4 points per game on 40% shooting, going 0-for-7 from deep in their games against the Cleveland Cavaliers and Houston Rockets.

Without taking into account the Cavs and Rockets games, Shamet had only scored 4.3 points, turning in a 35.3 shooting rate from the three-point line, prompting the media to ask him about his shooting woes.

Shamet bounced back remarkably well against the porous Hawks defense, scoring 12 points on three-of-six shooting from beyond the arc to propel the comeback.

"I feel good, I’m getting comfortable, starting to figure things out and get used to everything going on around here [in Phoenix]," Shamet remarked.

The Suns traded fan-favorite Jevon Carter for Shamet as they looked to improve their bench depth, exchanging Carter’s defense for Shamet’s instant offense and sweet-shooting.

It was a difficult piece of news for Suns fans to accept, but the lack of consistent firepower from deep hurt them remarkably in their NBA Finals stint against Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks.

The 24-year-old out of Wichita State also received a four-year, $43 million extension from the Suns at the tail end of the offseason in the hopes of him developing into the shooter that they need.

However, Shamet is doubtful to play in their Wednesday, November 10 game against the Portland Trail Blazers due to a reported foot contusion.

Resident big man Deandre Ayton has also been ruled out for the said game, making it his third straight on the sidelines.

The Suns are hoping that Shamet can suit up as they will be needing his outside scoring and wing defense to prevent Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum from potentially exploding if they want to extend their winning streak to six games.
