Earlier this year, Sony Interactive entertainment lead Architect Mark Cerny revealed that the PlayStation 5 houses a powerful customized AMD Zen 2 architecture processor and a solid-state drive. Interestingly, a new patent filing was recently shared online, revealing another alleged major feature of Sony’s PS5. The patent is for a new technology called share tagging that will enable users to share content with each other.

The patent filed by Sony Interactive Entertainment on Nov. 21 at the US Patent Office (USPTO) was first spotted by gaming leakster RespawnFirst. It contains details of Sony’s future plan to encourage gamers to share content with one another through scene tagging technology. The patent describes the new technology as a tool to characterize user-generated content, which includes gameplay details of video games.

Exemplary user-generated contents include screenshots and video recordings from the video game the relate to the events that recently took place, the description explains. Based on the patent’s description, it sounds like it could work well with a PlayStation 5 function, which is similar to the Share Button feature of the PlayStation 4. But, as the patent describes, scene tagging sounds a little bit sophisticated than merely screen grabbing and screen capturing.
The descriptions states:

"Corresponding metadata would then be used to describe substantive aspects about the user-generated content such as details about where the recording or screenshot was taken, who was included in the user-generated content, and what objects are found in the user-generated content...
"Furthermore, the metadata associated with the user-generated content would allow viewers to experience the same events that were recorded."

Sifting through the technical terms, we can say that the potential PlayStation 5 feature scene tagging is less of a screengrab and more about user experience. Viewers could have the chance to evaluate the scene, identify other players, find critical items, objectives, missions, and more. Also, gamers can search for scene tags from a particular game or a level and request other gamers’ scene tags. This rumored PS5 feature is an exciting concept.

However, the patent of the alleged PlayStation 5 scene tagging feature is not an indication that it will land on Sony’s next-generation gaming console. There is even a chance that it will remain an idea. But, it is interesting to learn that the Japanese console maker is serious about taking user-generated content to the next level. The scene tagging feature is a way to create a genuinely collaborative PlayStation community.

PlayStation 5 is scheduled to arrive sometime in the holiday of 2020.
