Chicken chain Popeyes is digging deeper into its Louisiana roots and is now offering up chocolate-stuffed beignets at select restaurants.

The announcement comes as the fast-food chain has been dishing up the chocolate-filled beignets at a series of locations across the country. The menu item has already been spotted in multiple Massachusetts restaurants. One Instagram foodie from Boston told FoodBeast “the chocolate was just oozing out of them.”

The New Orleans-style dessert is a fried dough concoction that is stuffed with chocolate and sprinkled with powdered sugar. The beignets will be sold in three-packs for $1.99, six-packs for $3.99, or as a dozen for $7.49.

A spokesperson for Popeyes confirmed the beignet menu addition to the news outlet, saying, “As a brand from New Orleans we are always looking to bring new dishes and desserts from our hometown to the menu, but at this time the beignets are only available at select restaurants.”

The beignets will, however, eventually be available nationwide, Popeyes said.

Popeyes joins several other companies in adding a chocolate treat to its fall offerings. Chick-fil-A introduced a chocolate brownie to its dessert menu in September, and Sonic Drive-In is now featuring a Chocolate Trick or Treat Blast that has Snickers, M&M’s, and Oreos mixed in, just in time for Halloween.

Even the craft beer industry is getting into the chocolate business as Hershey and Yuengling have teamed up to launch a chocolate porter beer that is only available for a limited time in 22 states. Hershey’s also launched a pretzel-filled Reese’s Big Cup this fall.
