KEY POINTS

  • Liverpool drew 0-0 vs Man Utd in the Premier League Sunday
  • Liverpool now have not scored in three straight league games
  • The Reds next place Burnley in the league

Liverpool FC registered an unwanted record during their disappointing goalless draw against Manchester United in their Premier League meeting Sunday.

Liverpool have failed to score in three consecutive Premier League matches for the first time since March 2005, according to Opta Sports. Prior to the 0-0 draw against Manchester United in the ongoing 2020-21 campaign, Liverpool did not score in 1-0 loss to Southampton and a goalless draw against Newcastle United.

Jurgen Klopp’s side entered Sunday’s game trailing Manchester United by three points. At the end of the Anfield night, the Reds dropped to No. 4 in the table after 18 games. Meanwhile, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side remains at the top of the table with 37 points after as many matches. Liverpool now trail second and third-placed Manchester City and Leicester City by a point.

After a dominant run in the previous season, Klopp’s side is the only third defending champion to not score in three straight league matches, following Arsenal in 1998-99 and Leicester in 2016-17.

The Reds, who have won nine, drawn seven and lost two, have now gone four successive league games without a victory, managing to score only once across those matches.

After hammering Crystal Palace 7-0 in December, Liverpool have registered a 1-1 draw against West Brom, a goalless draw against Newcastle, a 1-0 loss to Southampton, and a 0-0 draw against Manchester United.

On being asked about going goalless in three straight league matches, Liverpool boss Klopp said his side needs to work on it but there is no need to worry.

"We try and we don't score or we try and we score – that's a big difference, to be honest. [Jordan Henderson] is right, we have not to worry about it but obviously, we work on it. It's not that we ignore the fact and just hope it will be good again. We did that but the only possibility you have to score goals is to create situations and to be ready to fail and to do it again. That's a massive difference between when you are flying and you score with pretty much each chance you have because then you deal with the missed chances better. It is just information," Klopp told Liverpool FC’s official website after the Man Utd game Sunday.

The German boss went on to add that he saw his team play really good football Sunday with a clear idea, with super passes, great counter-press, and great desire to score.

"We will create chances and we will score, but I know, now we face Burnley on Thursday and they are not famous for conceding an awful lot of goals. Then a few days later we play again against United and they obviously defend with all they have. It is not that we just decide from now on we want to score again and now we will do it, but I see the boys really in the situation and I will help as much as I can so that we change it as quickly as possible," Klopp added further.
