KEY POINTS

  • Frank Lampard is still after Ben Chilwell and Kai Havertz
  • Lampard is still backed by the Blues' top brass
  • Lampard wants to fill gaps within team

Chelsea FC already have two key signings in Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech, but Frank Lampard is far from finished. In fact, the 42-year-old manager wants more signings this summer. He believes that certain positions could still use some improvement, hinting that other high-profile targets are still on.

The two high-profile names are Ben Chilwell and Kai Havertz. To complete the pursuit, the Blues will need to shell out $98 million for Chilwell and another $11 million for Havertz. Given that most clubs are now facing financial difficulties, it appears Chelsea budgeted well for these targets. And the push is understandable considering Chelsea failed to land any credible signings during the last transfer window.

Also providing a boost to Lampard's intent is that he has the backing of team owner Roman Abramovich. Though he has not directly spoken to the Russian billionaire, Lampard is able to get thing done through links with the club owner. He also holds a good relationship with technical adviser Petr Cech and director Marina Granovskala, all working together to close gaps that Chelsea needs to address at the moment, Sky Sports reported.

"We have done some business now that will hopefully improve us for next season and we want to keep moving forward," Lampard said.

"We know there is a big gap going upwards, when you look at the performance of Liverpool and Manchester City in the last couple of years. So we need to try to work to close that gap but we have to be ready to give the players that come in, the two players you’re talking about, some time for adapting to the League," he added.

Hence, questions surrounding the pursuit of the Blues on Chilwell and Havertz should be answered. Big money is involved but it appears Chelsea is ready and able. But included in that is how Lampard can blend in the new and old. That includes guys like Tammy Abraham, the player that has shone brightly this season at Emirates Stadium.

In a previous post, it was already mentioned how Lampard had a pep talk with Abraham. He briefed him on the coming of Werner, something that should give him some competition. However, the Blues coach stressed that incoming players are always challenges for current players. It has been that way before and it will certainly be that way for the Blues moving forward.
