A 24-year-old priest from India's Gujarat state has been arrested after he allegedly killed his mother while she was asleep.

Karan Joshi had allegedly strangled his 55-year-old mother, identified as Geeta, and then stabbed her multiple times in the abdomen in their home located in Damka, Surat Monday, newspaper The Times of India reported.

Geeta had refused to open the door when Karan returned home at around 9 p.m. prior to the murder, according to the report. Karan was allegedly only allowed to enter their house after he and Geeta argued for around 15 minutes.

Karan then allegedly went to his mother's bedroom while she was asleep and killed her there. He was reportedly arrested after his father, Vasant Joshi, filed a complaint at the Ichhapore police station.

"[Karan] was present in the house when the police arrived. Based on Vasant's statement, we arrested [his son]," a police officer was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

Karan initially did not share details about the murder, but he confessed to the crime during cross examination, police said.

The father and son duo had performed various rituals at the residences of their clients in their home village as well as in neighboring villages, which the younger Joshi did not take seriously, according to Vasant.

Karan was also not serious about marriage and always wanted to be with his friends, whom he spent a lot of money on, Vasant said. His parents had allegedly stopped giving him money and forced him to get married

Karan's parents also allegedly used to scold him over his habit of roaming with friends for long hours, which had led to frequent quarrels. Neighbors confirmed with police that heated arguments were very common among the family members.

A similar incident happened in the Indian state of Assam Tuesday when a man allegedly murdered his mother and turned himself in.

Dipankar Mandal claimed he murdered his 55-year-old mother, identified as Purobi Dey Mandal, when he surrendered himself to the Jalukbari police station.

"We are yet to figure out why he murdered his mother as he has not revealed it to us," an officer was quoted as saying. Police added that Dipankar had mental health issues.

The incident occurred while Purobi was still engaged in offering religious rituals, sources said.
