Prince Charles will one day become king, but not everyone is excited for him to take over the throne.

According to E! News, the 70-year-old heir is not necessarily the public’s favorite king because of all the scandals and controversies he was involved in. Prince Charles was in a failed marriage with Princess Diana years ago. He also had an affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, who he is now married to.

Prince Charles’ biographer, Sally Bedell Smith, also said that Queen Elizabeth II wasn’t happy when she found out that Prince Charles had an affair with Camilla. After all, her uncle, King Edward VIII, abdicated from the throne to marry twice-divorced American Wallis Simpson.

Her Majesty feared that Prince Charles would do the same, but he didn’t. The dad of two ended up marrying Camilla in a civil ceremony in 2005 – eight years after Princess Diana’s death.

Prince Charles’ marriage to Camilla has also sparked another controversy with regards to the Duchess of Cornwall’s royal title. When Prince Charles becomes king, Camilla will most likely be referred to as queen consort. However, there were some speculations suggesting that she will be called princess consort.

It is important to note that there has never been a princess consort in the British royal family because female spouses of male monarchs always choose to be called queen.

Meanwhile, a palace source told Vanity Fair last year that Prince Charles had been well aware that he will be the Prince of Wales for a very long time. This is why he planned his life accordingly. If he was crowned as King sooner, he wouldn’t have been able to accomplish everything that he did like the Prince of Wales.

Prince William and Kate Middleton also have no interest to take over as king and queen anytime soon. Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, Princes William and Harry’s principal private secretary from 2005 to 2013, said that all she can do is the plan for the desired end state, which is Prince William sitting on the throne respected, credible and connected.

By the time this happens, Prince George will also be of age.
