Queen Elizabeth II’s former press secretary left his job due to Prince Charles and Princess Diana.

Dick Arbiter worked for the monarch for over 12 years. He acted as a royal spokesman while managing media for ceremonies and royal engagements in Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle. He was also the one who coordinated the media coverage for Princess Diana’s funeral in 1997.

The former royal press secretary confessed that his job was so stressful. Part of his role was also to look after the Prince and Princess of Wales, but he resigned because he felt that he couldn’t take the pressure anymore.

“I was one of the Queen’s press secretaries with the remit. In addition to answering to her, 90 percent of my time was spent looking after the Prince of Wales and Diana,” Arbiter told Globalnews.ca. “I’d been on the job with them for five years. Any longer and I would’ve been burnt out.”

Prince Charles and Princess Diana had a lot of issues due to their marital woes. The Princess of Wales’ controversial “Panorama” interview in which she opened up about her troubled relationship with the future king shocked many. According to Penny Junor, it started the “War of the Waleses.”

Arbiter also addressed the speculations about Markle’s “difficult attitude” prompting her staff to quit their jobs as it has been reported that the duchess’ close aide, Amy Pickerill, will soon be leaving her role, too. According to Arbiter, some of the royal staff start their contracts during the same period, so they appear as if they are quitting at the same time.

Back in November, it was reported that three of Prince Harry and Markle’s aides quit within six months. There were speculations that the pregnant royal was difficult to work with. Melissa Touabti was Markle’s personal assistant and sources described her as “a hugely talented person.” Many were “shocked” when she decided to vacate her position because it was such a “prestigious job” to work for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Touabti played a vital role in the success of Prince Harry and Markle’s royal wedding. Palace sources said that she would be missed in the royal household.

While others blamed Markle why her aides resigned, another source said that it wasn’t her fault. A former royal aide told the Telegraph that Markle’s staff appear to be displaying “anti-American” attitude because when they joined the royal household, they were expecting to serve the Queen and not an American actress who starred in a legal drama on TV.
