Prince Philip was accused of having a brutal attitude towards his wife, Queen Elizabeth II.

Several years ago, the couple faced a rough patch in their marriage regarding the Mountbatten surname. After the Queen gave birth to Prince Andrew, she told then Prime Minister Harold Macmillan that she needed to revisit the issue of her and Prince Philip’s family name because it has been upsetting her husband.

In one of Macmillan’s journal entries, he wrote how Her Majesty wanted to make sure that would make a change to benefit the Duke of Edinburgh. The monarch also set her sights on making Prince Philip happy that’s why she allowed for his surname to be carried alongside the Windsor family name.

“What upsets me is the prince’s almost brutal attitude to the Queen over all this,” Macmillan said.

Eleven days before Prince Andrew was born, Prince Philip and the Queen reached a compromise and a new declaration was made in the Privy Council, stating that the couple’s descendants will carry the Mountbatten-Windsor surname.

Royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith claimed that the Queen and Prince Philip didn’t have another child shortly after Princess Anne was born because of their issue with their surnames. This is also why the couple made sure to settle things before the Queen gave birth to Prince Andrew.

Meanwhile, the agreement between the Queen and Prince Philip has paved the way for Camilla Parker Bowles to use the Mountbatten-Windsor surname if need be. Camilla tied the knot with Prince Charles in 2005 in a civil ceremony, and she was most popularly known as the Duchess of Cornwall.

But since she’s married to the future King, who also happens to be the Prince of Wales, she would have also been known as the Princess of Wales. However, Camilla refused the title after she wed Prince Charles because it previously belonged to the late Princess Diana.

Princess Diana was still married to Prince Charles when the latter had an affair with Camilla.
