The British royal family often travel abroad as part of their duties. Who do you think spent the most on his trips?

Harriet Mallinson, a journalist for Express, compared the Prince of Wales, Duke of Cambridge and Duke of Sussex's luxurious trips and learned that Prince Charles spent the most. The publication noted that although the younger dukes have racked up in their overseas trips, their travel costs are noticeably lower than their father. The difference could be due to Prince Charles taking private flights while his sons take more commercial flights.

Here's an overview of Prince Charles, Prince William and Prince Harry's travel expenses abroad.

Prince Charles

The Duke of Cornwall has reportedly used the royal train seven times which costs $25,690 per journey. The Queen only used it four times. Officials explained that it was the "most efficient and secure" transportation for the future king that provided the best value for money.

In addition, when Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles visited Italy, their travel expenses were estimated to reach $197,814. The couple reportedly traveled on the converted RAF A330 Voyager.

The palace explained why Prince Charles opt for this transportation and they believed that it was the best choice.

"The Prince of Wales is representing Her Majesty, therefore, it is important in terms of representation that the form of transport is appropriate but at the same time justified in terms of value for money," the palace said. "We are using the same aircraft that the prime minister or foreign secretary would be using for a similar visit."

On the same year, they also spent $55, 182 on flights for their official visit to Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Prince William

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge made the second most expensive trip. For the financial year 2016-2017, they spent $124, 597 for their trip to India and Bhutan.

Prince William and Middleton also flew to Paris in a private jet that cost them around $26, 075. In 2016, the second-in-line to the throne also made a two-day trip to Vietnam that added $72,956 to his travel expenses.

Prince Harry

Meanwhile, Prince Harry spent $126, 157 during his trip to Brazil and Chile. During the said visit, he was given a pop star welcome by 2, 500 screaming fans in Brazil.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are set to fly to Australia in October for the 2018 Invictus Games. It was previously reported that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle would stay at the multi-million dollar waterfront mansion - Villa Del Mare.
