Princess Diana’s controversial statement about her marriage to Prince Charles caused a huge problem between her, the palace, and some members of the royal family.

On the podcast “Images of Diana,” host Natasha Kaplinsky said that Princess Diana’s statement about having three people in her marriage to Prince Charles had a massive impact on her relationship with her fellow royals, particularly Princess Margaret.

Even though Queen Elizabeth’s sister was quite supportive of Princess Diana after her separation from Prince Charles, she had a change of heart after hearing the late royal’s interview with Panorama.

“It had a massive impact and decimated her relationship with the Palace. This was it. This was like a suicide note to being a royal wasn’t it?” she said. The host also reacted to royal biographer Andrew Morton’s statement about Princess Margaret banning all photos of Princess Diana in magazines because she no longer wanted to have anything to do with her.

“And that reflected a general feeling inside the Royal Family, and of course, just a few weeks afterward the Queen realizing that this was damaging the monarchy, this war between the Waleses, and instructed that they should both divorce because things were just going to get worse,” she said.

Meanwhile, Princess Diana’s controversial interview with Martin Bashir for Panorama was watched by 25 million people. According to royal biographer Sarah Bradford, Princess Diana regretted taking part in the interview, but she also felt that she had no choice but to stand up for herself.

“She didn’t like not being HRH anymore. But she should just couldn’t help dealing a body blow, which is what she did. I think she made herself quite unpopular, a lot of people disapproved. A lot of people thought she had gone potty. The way she looked, the way she talked,” she said.

In the end, it was that particular interview that encouraged the Queen to push for Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s divorce.
