Princess Eugenie of York married her boyfriend of seven years, Jack Brooksbank, last year, and now many think she might be pregnant with their first child. The royal might be getting ready to start her own family, but the one she already has has had quite a few problems with money in the past.

The princess’ mother, Duchess of York Sarah Ferguson, has had money troubles since the 1990s. She first landed in debt when she divorced Prince Andrew, Princess Eugenie’s father, in 1996 and mishandled her reported £3 million settlement. She ended up spending more than she had and found herself owing money.

In a few years, through various ambassadorships with companies and a lucrative deal with Weight Watchers, Ferguson was able to recover financially. The money she earned for speaking at events and appearing at an assortment of engagements also helped the situation.

She had about 10 good years of being financially stable before the money problems began again. In 2009, the wellness company she created, Hartmoor, had a debt of over £600,000, and the Duchess of York was being pursued by three firms for back payments she owed.

Later on, her family had to help her get out of the £2 million debt she eventually found herself in. Her ex-husband’s private Buckingham Palace office stepped in to fix her finances and limit her spending.

Hopefully, now that a few years have passed, Princess Eugenie’s family’s history of money problems are behind them, and she can start fresh with her husband and future family.
