KEY POINTS

  • Roman Reigns is currently the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion
  • Cody Rhodes taking the Universal Championship on Night 1 is a possibility
  • Defeating his cousin The Rock on Night 2 will be best for his character's development

Roman Reigns has had a stranglehold on the main event picture since winning the WWE Championship off Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 38.

With how dominant of a performer Reigns is, the question now among WWE fans is who will take the title off him and how will WWE book such a momentous occasion?

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer had recently spoken with Wrestling Inc. and is confident that Reigns should perform on both nights of WrestleMania 39–one night against Cody Rhodes and the other against The Rock.

"You could do it, but I just think if Rock's going to wrestle, it should be one-on-one with Roman, and Cody (Rhodes) can get the shot at another point in time... They have other big shows, and there are two days of WrestleMania if you want to do it that way," Meltzer said.

"I don't know if they would do it that way, but I don't think there's anything wrong with Roman Reigns wrestling twice and promoting the hell out of that aspect of it, too."

It certainly would be an interesting proposition to have Reigns wrestle in the main event on both days, but it could also turn out to be the smartest move WWE could make to ensure the split of both titles without damaging Reigns' character.

Meltzer pointed out that having Rhodes be a surprise entrant in the January 2023 Royal Rumble and eventually winning the event makes a ton of sense since he is expected to be back around that time after his gnarly torn pectoral injury.

If that were to be the case, Rhodes winning the WWE Universal Championship would be the likely trajectory since he is already on the Raw brand and it will push him to the top of the main event scene with top performers like Seth Rollins, Kevin Owens and Finn Balor.

As for The Rock, putting the title on a part-timer would certainly draw the ire of the fans so the likelihood of Reigns retaining the WWE Championship is extremely high.

Defeating his cousin also makes sense for the Reigns character since he has been on a mission to have everyone in their legendary family tree acknowledge him as "The Tribal Chief," with The Rock being the only family member missing from the list.

It would be a bold move on WWE's part to have Reigns perform on both nights since it will understandably take the shine away from the women's division which usually headlines the first night.

WWE and chief content officer Triple H has a ton of avenues to work with before WrestleMania 39 in April 2023, and fans will be closely watching the build towards the "Showcase of the Immortals."
