KEY POINTS

  • Best Buy is likely to restock on Friday based on their usual pattern
  • Best Buy is six weeks overdue for a major PS5 restock
  • Walmart and Gamestop may possibly restock by this week or the next

Best Buy is set to release a fresh stock of PS5 consoles this Friday after six long weeks of having nothing to sell, recently released information has suggested.

The surprise PS5 sale from Walmart and Best Buy caught many people by surprise, and despite the timing, Tech Radar’s Matt Swider suggested that even more consoles may still be coming before the week ends. If past restock schedules and patterns are to be used as a basis, Swider said that Best Buy is due for another sale on Friday.

This prediction comes from the fact that Friday is Best Buy’s usual restock date. Thursday’s surprise sale may point toward a very likely Friday sale, but at this point, it is pure speculation. Best Buy has been out of the PS5 selling scene for over a month now, but if yesterday’s restock flew under the radar of Swider’s insider contacts, a Friday sale remains likely.

The same logic somewhat applies to Walmart considering how the store hasn’t made a significant restock of its PS5 inventory in weeks. The previous Walmart PS5 drops have seen only a limited amount of consoles up for sale compared to the bigger waves in the previous months. If Walmart doesn’t open up shop for PlayStation fans Friday, then another small inventory sale is expected by next week at least.

Unfortunately for this week, not much is set in stone. Gamestop is expected to host a PS5 sale either by this week or early next week based on its restock patterns, but it’s too early to confirm whether or not it will actually happen. Sony is still having trouble with the production of new PlayStation 5s due to the global shortage of semiconductors, and the pseudo-shortage of consoles created by scalpers is still causing trouble for many hopeful buyers.

Recently, Sony announced that it is attempting to increase its PS5 production rate by asking help from its suppliers, but it’s still unclear as to whether or not this has had any tangible effect on market supply.

While a PS5 normally costs between £360 and £450 ($500/$627, 420/525 euros) depending on the model, its median resale price on sites like eBay is £650-750, according to US researcher Michael Driscoll.
