Queen Elizabeth II reportedly did not allow Prince William to pursue his goal of becoming a frontliner.

Prior to becoming a full-time working royal, Prince William pursued an alternate career path and worked as an ambulance pilot. However, the future king was forced to leave the job and could not serve in the military because of his duties in the monarchy.

Speaking on Channel 5’s documentary “William and Kate: Too Good To Be True,” commentator Simon Vigar shared how the Duke of Cambridge was forbidden from pursuing a career in the military. He explained that Kate Middleton’s husband “wasn't allowed anywhere near the frontline.”

Prince William trained as helicopter pilot and spent two years flying medics to emergencies. However, he wasn’t allowed to serve in the British Armed Forces.

“William was desperate to stay in the military and of course he trained to be a helicopter pilot,” Vigar shared.

“But in the end, he wasn't allowed anywhere near the frontline. The ultimate boss said no because he is second-in-line to the throne,” he continued, referring to the Queen as the “ultimate boss.”

Even though Prince William didn’t get what he wanted, he eventually found a common ground with the monarchy.

“He retrained as a search and rescue pilot on Anglesey. He helped save many, many lives flying that yellow helicopter around the British Isles… So that gave him a meaningful role. And that meant an awful lot to him,” the British broadcaster continued.

When the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, Prince William reportedly wanted to “do his bit” as an air ambulance pilot. However, his royal obligations prevented him from doing so, especially after his younger brother Prince Harry stepped down and their father Prince Charles tested positive for coronavirus.

“William has been seriously considering returning as an air ambulance pilot to help in the current pandemic,” a source said.

“He knows the whole country is doing its bit and he wants to help. But it’s complicated as he was originally grounded from the job so that he could become a senior working royal. That role is even more important now given that Charles has been ill, Harry has walked away with Meghan and Andrew has been effectively barred from public life. But William is very keen to do anything he can to help,” the royal insider continued.
