Ray McDonald, a defensive back for the 49ers, was arrested Sunday morning on charges of domestic violence involving his pregnant fiancee. McDonald's arrest follows the NFL's announcement harsher penalties would be put on players accused of domestic violence. The league announced a six-game suspension would be implemented for first-time offenders, followed by a lifetime ban against repeat offenders.

The Sacramento Bee reported about 2 a.m., San Jose police were dispatched to McDonald's house. He was celebrating his 30th birthday with teammates Vernon Davis and Demarcus Dobbs. The police officers who arrived on the scene arrested McDonald on charges of "inflicting injury on a spouse or cohabitant," the Santa Clara Department of Corrections records obtained by the newspaper showed.

The 49ers have yet to comment on the incident.

The San Jose Police Department said Sunday afternoon that MacDonald was released on a $25,000 bail.
