Real Madrid reportedly want to sign Manchester United forward Edinson Cavani, who is competing with Cristiano Ronaldo for game time at Old Trafford.

Los Blancos are looking to strengthen their attack with a low-cost signing and they have made Cavani their target, reported Spanish publication El Nacional.

Cavani, who has just one year on his current deal, is due to leave Manchester United on a free transfer in the summer of 2022. But the former Napoli forward could be leaving Old Trafford in January as Real Madrid are planning to make a move for the Uruguayan national during the winter window.

Towards the end of last season, there were rumors that Cavani would head back to South America. But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer convinced him to ink a new one-year deal. Following that, Solskjaer landed former Juventus forward Ronaldo at Old Trafford, who has spearheaded Manchester United’s attack since then.

Cavani not only had to give up his No. 7 shirt for Ronaldo but also his playtime has reduced since then. Even though Cavani has missed a few games due to an injury, he and Ronaldo have a similar role on the field and as a result, he will have to battle the five-time Ballon d’Or winner for minutes at Old Trafford.

It is unclear if Cavani was assured enough play time when he signed an extension ahead of the 2021-22 campaignm according to the soccer website TEAMtalk.

It is understood that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is an admirer of Cavani and wanted to sign the former Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) star on a loan deal in August. However, the La Liga giants had failed to secure a deal for Cavani.

While Real Madrid also considered Radamel Falcao, who signed for Rayo Vallecano earlier this month and Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as other potential targets, they have now turned their full focus towards 34-year-old Cavani.
