KEY POINTS

  • Real Madrid are 17 points clear at the top of the league table
  • They defeated Osasuna 3-1 Wednesday
  • Madrid will face Man City in the UCL next week

Real Madrid have suffered a setback ahead of their UEFA Champions League semi-final clash with Manchester City.

Center-back David Alaba picked up an abductor issue during Real Madrid's La Liga outing at Osasuna on Wednesday. At the half-time break, Alaba fell on the ground and complained of discomfort in the adductor of his right leg, according to Spanish publication Marca.com.

As soon as Alaba fell, his fellow teammates surrounded him, while defender Dani Carvajal was immediately seen warming up.

Los Blancos boss Carlo Ancelotti also confirmed Alaba's injury after Real Madrid defeated Osasuna 3-1.

"We are optimistic with Alaba. He had a strain, we took him off as a precaution," Ancelotti told Mundo Deportivo.

It was Alaba who opened the scoring against Osasuna El Sadar stadium on Tuesday. Ante Budimir netted an equalizer for the home side just a minute later. Spanish forward Marco Asensio put the visitors back in front on the stroke of half-time. In-form Karim Benzema had a rare off day as two of his penalties were saved by Osasuna goalkeeper Sergio Herrera. In the stoppage time, Lucas Vazquez made it 3-1 for Real Madrid.

Earlier this month, Real Madrid defeated Chelsea 5-4 on aggregate to qualify for the last four of the 2021-22 Champions League. Los Blancos are set to take on last season's runners-up Manchester City in the first leg on May 4 at Santiago Bernabeu.

After 33 games in the La Liga, Real Madrid are 17 points clear at the top of the table. Ancelotti and co. are aiming to do a double. While they are in a comfortable position to win the league title, the 13-time champions will look to reclaim the European glory too. They last won the Champions League title in the 2017-18 season by defeating Liverpool in Kyiv. It was their third consecutive UCL title – the only team to have bagged a hat-trick title wins in the tournament.
