  • The former couple reportedly decided to just be friends because their relationship "was getting stale and complacent"

Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello have parted ways after two years together, but they're still friends.

Mendes, 23, and Cabello, 24, shocked fans when they announced the end of their relationship on Instagram Wednesday. An unnamed insider has shared more details about what went down between the "Señorita" collaborators, telling E! News that it was Mendes who "initiated the conversation" about breaking up last week.

The "Cinderella" star was "very upset over the split" but "agreed" it was for the best, according to the source.

"It was really hard for a few days but she has been spending a lot of time with friends and keeping busy," the insider said of the former Fifth Harmony performer. "She has a huge support system and is feeling renewed now."

Although they are no longer dating, the insider confirmed that they are "still in communication and want to be friends." The source added that it "was not a bad breakup at all."

The insider explained that Mendes and Cabello's romance simply fizzled out and that the couple decided to just be friends because their relationship "was getting stale and complacent."

Both pop stars made it clear that they were ending their relationship on good terms when they posted joint statements to their respective Instagram Stories earlier this week.

"Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever," the pair said in their split announcement. "We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends. We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward. – Camila and Shawn."

Before they started dating in 2019, Mendes and Cabello had been friends for years. They first collaborated on the hit "I Know What You Did Last Summer" in 2015.

In an interview with Ellen DeGeneres in 2019, Cabello admitted she "had a crush" on Mendes for years.

In the same year, she told Rolling Stone that she "really bonded with him as more than a friend" when they were working on "I Know What You Did Last Summer."

"I think he did, too, but we were both really young, and he was experiencing the pressures of his career. I don’t think we knew what to do with those feelings. It was this awkward thing where we both liked each other, but we weren’t together. It was just weird," Cabello recalled.
