Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, on Wednesday criticized President Trump's well-wishes for alleged Jeffrey Epstein accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell, calling Trump's comments “unacceptably obtuse.” Maxwell, who was arrested on July 2 on sex trafficking and perjury charges, was a former confidant and ex-girlfriend of Epstein.

“This is unacceptably obtuse for a woman accused of the most morally depraved of crimes, @realDonaldTrump,” Roy tweeted. “She needs to be severely punished... and justice must be served for the girls she abused. For ALL involved.”

When asked Tuesday about Maxwell’s case, Trump said, "I wish her well, whatever it is.” Trump said he had met Maxwell “numerous times” over the years.

Roy has previously been critical of Trump. He has slammed Trump for congratulating China on its 70th anniversary of communist rule. He also shot back at Trump’s racist attack on four minority Democratic congresswomen last summer to “go back” where they came from.

By his own admission, Trump has had a close relationship with Epstein and joked in a 2002 interview with New York Magazine that the financier “likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side.”

Epstein, who in 2008 pleaded guilty to a felony charge of solicitation of prostitution involving a minor, was arrested on child sex trafficking charges in July 2019 for allegedly sexually abusing girls as young as 14 years old. He was found dead in his New York jail cell a month later.
