Defending champions South Africa were knocked out of the Rugby World Cup 2011 after Australia came out top in the quarterfinals at Wellington.

In a low scoring game, it was the Springboks who dominated possession but the combination of frustrating errors and a magnificent defensive display from the men down under proved enough to eliminate the defending champions from the tournament.

Australian captain James Horwill scored the only try of the game while two penalties from winger James O'Connor accumulated a total enough to fend off the Springboks. David Pocock earned the man-of-the-match award for his brilliant defensive performance for Australia, as South Africa could score only through Morne Steyn, whose two penalties and a drop-kick gained 9 points.

Australia will now face New Zealand in the semi-finals after the All Blacks earned a 33-10 victory over Argentina in the other quarterfinal.
