KEY POINTS

  • LaMelo Ball is projected to build a backcourt-duo with D’Angelo Russell
  • Playing LaMelo as the point can give D-Lo the time to be full-time scorer
  • Scoring will not be a problem as he is the main man during his stay with Illawarra Hawks

In an interview, LaVar Ball said that his son will be picked number one in the upcoming draft and he also said that it is important for a player to play for a team that will utilize him. Following the latter scenario, LaMelo Ball may find himself wearing the Wolves threads.

The updated mock draft published by Bleacher Report listed the 18-year old as the third-overall pick and he will be going to the Minnesota Timberwolves. There have been a lot of talks going around that he might become the number one pick but should that fat change, he will be in great company with the Wolves.

According to B/R, a projected tandem between the youngest son of LaVar and D’Angelo Russell would be a great addition to the system of coach Ryan Saunders. Both of them are proven elite ballhandlers and both are also capable of scoring in bunches.

Shipped by the Golden State Warriors before the trade deadline, Russell has been carrying the load for his former team who was missing the services of their top guns Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson due to injuries. His stay with the Timberwolves now will benefit young center Karl-Anthony Towns in terms of scoring.

Adding LaMelo to the roration will give the team versatility on the backcourt as both of them can play both guard positions. Ball is a 6-foot-7 guard with superb passing ability will be a match-up problem at the one-spot should he be given the task of orchestrating the offense for the Wolves and Russell can go full-time as a shooting guard.

If the two get switched, the situation is not new to LaMelo as he is the one carrying the Illawarra Hawks in the NBL in terms of offense. He averaged around 17 points during this tenure with the Australian ballclub and was even named as the youngest player ever to record a triple-double in an NBL game.

Falling to the number three spot can still be considered as a blessing given the talent that the younger brother of New Orleans Pelicans guard Lonzo Ball has in him.
