  • "RuneLite" developer Adam1210 is also collaborating with Jagex and 117 over the HD mod's fate

In a sudden turn of events, “RuneScape” developer Jagex backpedaled on its decision to ban the much-awaited “RuneLite HD” fan mod that it deliberately took down just hours before the official launch.

Recently, Jagex ordered a mod maker named 117 to cancel the release of “RuneLite HD,” which was made to revamp the visuals of “RuneLite,” an open-source, community-run version of the classic “Old School RuneScape.” This move by Jagex caused fans to host in-game protests in defense of 117 and their mod, which reportedly took over 2,000 hours to make.

Following the backlash, Jagex posted an update on its website regarding its decision to stop the HD mod from going live. The developers said that they heard the community’s feedback and decided to work with “RuneLite HD’s” author while they discuss how to handle the matter at hand.

117 and “RuneLite” developer Adam have been included in the developers’ discussion surrounding HD mods and other projects that may drastically alter the game’s appearance. Jagex mentioned that it is actively exploring ways to incorporate “RuneLite HD” into the game until the official HD version is released.

Previously, 117 mentioned on their Twitter that they wanted to compromise with Jagex. The mod creator said they would let the developers take their mod down once the official version was released while also giving them full collaborative control over the project’s direction. However, Jagex allegedly “outright declined” this offer, according to 117.

The developers admitted that banning the “Runelite HD” mod was a mistake and that they are now trying to rectify their approach. Fans of the game have long been critical of Jagex’s decisions, claiming that the company’s upper management has been mishandling “RuneScape.”

Jagex also claimed that its staff members have been experiencing “unacceptable levels of abuse” ever since “RuneLight HD’s” ban was announced. The company sent a plea to angry fans asking that they treat its employees with respect as it tries to find a solution that works for all parties involved.

117 expressed their thanks for the support they received from the community and also asked fans not to harass Jagex staff, especially the “Old School RuneScape” team.

As of writing, “RuneLite HD” is not available on “RuneLite’s” plugin hub.
