Russia continues to report more than 33,000 new COVID-19 cases daily amid a resurgence of the disease in the country.

About 33,061 COVID-19 cases and 57 deaths were recorded in Russia Monday, state-owned news agency TASS reported, citing the country's anti-coronavirus crisis center.

Russia reported 39,669 new coronavirus cases and 64 deaths Sunday.

Around 1,704 coronavirus-related hospitalizations were also reported Monday, compared to the 1,853 on the previous day.

The number of hospitalized patients increased in 29 regions, decreased in 47 and remained unchanged in nine, the anti-coronavirus crisis center told reporters.

Overall, Russia has reported around 19.2 million coronavirus cases and 383,617 deaths so far, they said.

The country also saw 40,010 new COVID-19 cases Saturday, a new high since March, according to TASS.

It is unclear what is driving this new surge in coronavirus cases.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) added Russia to its coronavirus travel warning list on Aug. 15 with a level 3 health notice — the second highest in the agency's classification system.

Both the Philippines and Nepal were also classified as level 3 destinations that day, The Hill reported.

"Make sure you are up to date with your COVID-19 vaccines before traveling to this destination. If you are not up to date with your vaccines, avoid travel to this destination," the CDC said of level 3 destinations.

Those who are up to date with their coronavirus vaccines may still be at risk of being infected and spreading the disease should they travel to these locations, the health agency added.

The State Department also issued a "Do Not Travel" advisory for Russia on Aug. 15 over concerns that U.S. citizens may face harassment, among other things.

"Do not travel to Russia due to the unprovoked and unjustified invasion of Ukraine by Russian military forces, the potential for harassment against U.S. citizens by Russian government security officials, the singling out of U.S. citizens in Russia by Russian government security officials including for detention, the arbitrary enforcement of local law, limited flights into and out of Russia, the Embassy's limited ability to assist U.S. citizens in Russia, COVID-19-related restrictions, and terrorism. U.S. citizens residing or traveling in Russia should depart Russia immediately. Exercise increased caution due to wrongful detentions," the department said.

The U.S. has reported around 93.4 million COVID-19 cases and 1,035,469 deaths, data provided by the CDC showed.
