  • "Rust" is getting a new quest system that will reward players with in-game loot
  • The new update will also add a new Camper Van vehicle
  • The mission system will be further improved in later updates

Players will soon be able to run around in the wastelands of “Rust” with purpose as an incoming patch is set to add a mission system given by new NPCs found across the game’s world.

The new system will have players performing tasks for the NPCs in exchange for scrap and treasures, PC Gamer has learned. The tasks range from mundane chores like fishing or hunting animals to uncovering treasures that are hidden around the wasteland according to Facepunch Studios, and all of the tasks can be repeated more than once for more rewards.

The developers said that this is only the first iteration of “Rust’s” mission system. Future updates will eventually include more varieties of missions including ones for co-op and PvP. Mission varieties will include ambush, delivery and bounty hunting, among others.

To help players as they work on their tasks is the new Camper Van, a mobile base that can house up to four players. This vehicle serves a variety of purposes: it can function as a spawn point for players who claim a seat in it, it has enough storage space for some extra loot or resources that players might pick up and it also comes with a cooking station.

The van is going to be a great exploration vehicle for groups that like to stick together. It’s nature as a mobile spawn point can also be extremely helpful when raiding bases, just in case things don’t go as planned. Camper modules can be crafted in Tier 2 Workbenches and will set players back 175 Metal Frags and 125 Wood.

“Rust” remains a popular game even after eight years since it first entered Steam. The game’s near-sadistic cruelty in its treatment of the classic open-world sandbox style of games was ironically endearing to many of the players who learned to fully embraced the harsh conditions of surviving in a lawless land.

Facepunch Studios continues to improve the game with frequent content drops and bug fixes. In August, “Rust” received an underwater-themed update that introduced fishing, submarines, sharks, spearguns and labs.

The first iteration of “Rust’s” mission system will be playable starting Oct. 7.
