Last year was a big one for Scarlett Johansson. She played big roles in two highly acclaimed films, Netflix’s “Marriage Story” and director Taika Waititi’s “Jojo Rabbit.”

Now, Johansson is nominated for two Academy Awards. She’s up for best actress in a leading role for “Marriage Story” and best actress in a supporting role for “Jojo Rabbit.” Each role saw the actor taking on a challenge she hadn’t previously addressed in her other films: motherhood.

Johansson said that being a parent helped her immensely with getting into character for each role.

“I think for actors, of course, there are ways of getting yourself where you need to go. Being a parent myself was just invaluably helpful to me. I had empathy for Rosie’s plate that I may not have had insight on otherwise,” she told People about her part in “Jojo Rabbit.”

In the movie, Johansson portrays a loving, goofy mother to 12-year-old actor Roman Griffin Davis, who plays the titular role of Jojo.

“I’ve never had a child in [a] film before. And then this year, I made two films where suddenly [I had] 10 and 11-year-olds — so I kind of became this insta-parent.”

Johansson’s daughter, Rose Dorothy Dauriac, was born in 2014 while Johansson was married to the journalist Romain Dauriac. The two divorced in 2017, according to The Washington Post, shortly before Johansson began dating “Saturday Night Live” writer and actor Colin Jost.

Rose’s birth has clearly had an impact on Johansson’s career and might be the reason she takes home two wins at the Oscars this Sunday.
