Following the end of Season 2, ABC’s “Secrets and Lies” wasn’t expected to return for a third season and now, the series has learned its fate. After two seasons on the air, the Juliette Lewis-led show has been canceled.

Based on an Australian program of the same name, the anthology premiered in 2015 with a good first season. The second season didn’t premiere until 16 months later in 2016 with ABC leaving the series off its yearly midseason schedule. While the Season 2 premiere had good numbers, ratings continued to decline as the season went on.

According to Variety, “Season 1 of the series managed decent ratings during its run, with the season as a whole averaging a 1.5 rating in adults 18-49 and 5.7 million viewers per episode.” As for Season 2, the 10 episodes “averaged just a 0.8 rating and 3.3 million viewers per episode, a decline of close to 50 percent in both key measures.”

On Twitter, the show’s executive producer and writer, Barbie Kligman, thanked the cast, crew and fans of the show, writing, “To cast, crew, staff and amazing fans, can’t thank you enuf 4 the beautiful work, the love and support. Was truly a pleasure.”

Actress Cole Bernstein, who played Jennifer Barrett on the show, also tweeted about the news. “Thank you @Barbielk for an incredible run! It was a pleasure to be a part of such an incredible show! I’m so saddened to hear about its fate.”

Fans of the series also took the news of cancelation hard, with one fan tweeting, “This breaks my heart. I absolutely loved the show! Not many keep me coming back for more, but this one did. Thank you for that.”

Another user tweeted, “@Barbielk So sorry to hear about #SecretsAndLies Thank you and everyone from Seasons 1-2 for wonderful storytelling,” while someone else wrote, “Gonna miss #SecretsAndLies. Thank you for a great 2 seasons, @Barbielk @JulietteLewis!” Check out some of the other fan reactions below:

Fortunately, fans of the series were able to get the answers they were looking for during Season 2 including who killed Kate Warner (Jordanna Brewster). But the show did end with one unanswered question: who shot detective Cornell (Juliette Lewis)?

In the final episode of Season 2 the detective entered her home and realized someone was in it. After slowly searching through the rooms, she discovered her daughter, high on drugs, going through her belongings. While talking to her daughter, Cornell realized her gun was missing. As she turned around, the screen went black and gunshots are heard.

“Secrets and Lies” wasn’t the only show to be canceled by ABC this week. The network also put an end to “American Crime,” “Dr. Ken,” “Imaginary Mary,” “The Catch” and “The Real O’Neals.”

As for what’s next for Kligman, the producer didn’t reveal her future plans but did retweet fans asking her where she would go from here. “@Barbielk not happy about the #SecretsandLies news. What’s next for you Barbie? You’re an incredible producer,” wrote one fan.
