ABC’s “Single Parents” comes to an end tonight, but will it be back? As Season 2 wraps up, fans are left wondering whether the half-hour comedy will be canceled or renewed for Season 3.

ABC has not announced whether they will renew or cancel “Single Parents.” The network actually hasn’t made any announcements for the majority of their TV shows, so fans shouldn’t take their silence as a bad sign. Instead, they should look to ratings for clues.

Unfortunately, the ratings aren’t great. “Single Parents” is averaging nearly 1 million fewer viewers this season with 2.59 million total audience members. It’s also down to a 0.61 in the all-important 18-49 demographic compared to last season’s 0.88.

In the demo, “Single Parents” ranks 12th out of ABC’s 20 scripted shows this season. In the ranking of overall viewers, however, the comedy slips down to 16 of 20, according to TV Series Finale. Considering the ratings weren’t impressive to begin with, this slip is not a good sign.

However, the ratings are not a death sentence. Numbers that aren’t public, like international sales and streaming stats, could help ABC decide to renew it for Season 3. Also, the comedy is generally well-received by critics and audiences, which is also helpful. Consider “Single Parents” firmly on the bubble until ABC says otherwise.

Another good sign of a possible renewal is that the “Single Parents” writers did not write a series finale. There are plenty of loose ends that would need to be tied up in the third season. Wednesday’s “Single Parents” Season 2 finale, titled “No. Wait. What? Hold on,” involves some big relationship changes for Angie (Leighton Meester) and a major cliffhanger.

Angie’s rekindled friendship with baby daddy Derek (Adam Brody, Meester’s real-life husband) has been deepening, but an opportunity to spend the summer with him has Will (Taran Killam) evaluating his feelings for his best friend. Meanwhile, Douglas (Brad Garrett) and Poppy (Kimrie Lewis) start scheming to help their friends.

Per ABC’s official logline for the finale, “Angie struggles to recall the events of a wine-filled night of packing with Will, while Poppy secretly encourages Will to share his true feelings. Meanwhile, Derek arrives to gather Angie and her belongings, while Rory and Miggy are enlisted to find a hot guy to sublet the house.”

The “Single Parents” Season 2 finale airs Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. EDT on ABC.
