KEY POINTS

  • Man Utd now have defeated Man City in both legs this Premier League
  • Martial and McTominay scored in Sunday's game at Old Trafford
  • Man Utd are just three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer explained Manchester United are a few signings away from being Premier League contenders after his side defeated Manchester City 2-0 Sunday.

Earlier in the season, Solskjaer’s boys had won the Manchester derby at Etihad too and by winning at Old Trafford, they completed a league double over Man City for the first time in 10 years. The last time Man Utd defeated Man City in both the legs in the Premier League was back under the management of Sir Alex Ferguson during the 2009-10 season.

The ongoing 2019-20 season has also seen Man Utd beat Chelsea in both the matches in the Premier League. By doing so, the Red Devils have completed a league double over Chelsea and Man City for the first time since the 1960-61 season.

Bruno Fernandes’s brilliant free-kick set up Anthony Martial’s opener just 30 minutes after the first whistle. Scott McTominay netted a screamer to seal Man Utd's win in the second half’s extra time.

Man Utd now have gone unbeaten in 10 straight matches, across competitions, and even though boss Solskjaer is happy with the side’s improvement, he still believes they are a few signings away from being one of the contenders for the Premier League title, which the former champions last won in 2012-13 edition.

“We feel we're improving all the time and we know that we lack one or two, three players and some experience to be considered a title contender, we know that and we're not going to start talking about that now. We're just going to start talking about getting up the table, getting more points, challenging for that top four because Chelsea and Leicester are too far ahead of us for my liking still,” he added in a post-match interview.

Solskjaer made a special mention of Fernandes in Man Utd’s memorable 2-0 win at Old Trafford Sunday.

“He works hard, he's humble enough, he's got the desire, commitment, but he's also got the X-factor," the United manager told a news conference.

"He's a risk-taker, he's got courage, he's brave enough to make mistakes and if you make enough mistakes they'll be corrected into fantastic assists or goals,” the Norwegian said after Man Utd earned three crucial points in the Premier League.

Man Utd, who now are just three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, next play in the Europa League before they travel to London to take on Spurs in a vital Premier League clash.
